Mr. Michael Bolen began his career with the Board of Public Works in 1996 as a Truck Driver. Over the course of 30 years, he has served in various roles, including recycling, paving, Heavy Equipment, Asbestos Coordinator, Street Inspector, and Field Supervisor. Mr. Bolen has worked under Directors Mr. Bob Robinson, Mr. Jerry Stump, and Mrs. Pamela Frey.
On May 1, 2025, City manager Phillip Jarrell made Michael Bolen the Director for the City of Beckley’s Board of Public Works. He manages the day-to-day operations of the ninth largest city in West Virginia in collaboration with two supervisors and one garage foreman.
The Board of Public Works employs 30 hardworking skilled men and women dedicated to performing multiple types of maintenance tasks including, but not limited to:
- Street Paving
- Street Sweeping
- Snow Removal
- Cutting of Right of Way
- Maintaining 3.62 miles Mcmannus Rail Trail
- Signs and Signals
- Paint Striping of Streets/Parking Lots
- Design and build Parking Lots
Public Works also performs new construction and demolition of dilapidated structures in addition to providing Beckley’s citizens with bi-weekly curbside recycling pickup, an annual curbside spring and fall cleanup and Christmas Tree pick up and disposal.
The Board of Public Works strives to maintain the infrastructure of the city of Beckley in a state of quality operation for a safe and healthy environment for all.
The Robert Dow Robinson Board of Public Works office is located at 401 Adair Street and is open Monday through Friday 7:00 am-3:00 pm.
