Beckley accepting orders for Hometown Hero Banners until February 20

The City of Beckley is accepting new orders for Hometown Hero Banners by February 20, 2026, or until 28 banners have been ordered. Over past years, 222 banners have been ordered and displayed on downtown light poles honoring local veterans. The banners are displayed between the months of May and November each year. This year’s banner order is limited to the first 28 new banner orders. Due to the scarce number of light poles available downtown for more banners finding 14 additional poles for 28 more banners may be a challenge, but the city plans to tie the total of number of banners (250) to the country’s 250th birthday.

The Hometown Heroes Banner Program honors veterans, both living and deceased, and active-duty members of the Armed Forces from the Beckley area. Each banner features the veteran’s photo, name, and branch of service. The banners can be sponsored by companies, organizations, or families.

Past hero banners have been taken down after the Veterans parade to install Christmas decorations; the banners have been stored for the winter months. Past banners are re-installed, along with the new banners, during the month of May, and the banners remain on the poles until mid-November.

The cost of ordering a banner is $90 (including tax); the city covers the cost of the brackets. Applications may be obtained at City Hall at 409 S. Kanawha Street or online at the city’s website (Beckley.gov) until February 20. The city plans to place the complete banner order with the banner company on February 27, 2026.
